Sculptural Masterpiece on Rokin Boulevard
Commissioned by the City of Amsterdam in 2017, Bicycloud is a stunning 100-meter-long installation by Tjep., gracing the revitalized Rokin boulevard as part of the Rode Loper refurbishment. Positioned beside two new metro entrances, this sculptural landmark transforms the urban landscape into a seamless blend of art and functionality.
Parametric Cloud of Bicycle Wheels and Diamonds
Bicycloud reimagines Amsterdam’s iconic bicycle wheels and diamonds into a mesmerizing parametric cloud. Designed by Frank Tjepkema, it embraces the chaotic beauty of parked bicycles—often called “fietsklont”—turning urban “visual noise” into a delicate lattice of circles and lines that celebrates the city’s vibrant cycling culture.
A Game of Parametric Elegance
“Interestingly, I discovered that bicycle wheels and diamonds are, graphically speaking, beautifully related,” says Frank Tjepkema, Tjep.’s founder. “It became a game of parametric programming to create a highly detailed sculptural fence that blends with the bicycles.” The result is a poetic camouflage, harmonizing with Amsterdam’s spirit.
Engineering a Sustainable Landmark
Crafted with advanced parametric design and computer-aided manufacturing, Bicycloud features 23 tons of stainless steel, 25 tons of sand for water jet cutting, 193 one-centimeter-thick plates, 600 hand-welded rods, and electrolytic polishing for a radiant finish. Its lace-like pattern evolves from bold to intricate, reflecting Amsterdam’s eco-conscious cycling ethos.
