Waterlandplein Stage: A Transformative Public Space by Tjep.
Tjep. has designed an innovative public space for Amsterdam-North, seamlessly blending art, functionality, and community engagement. Commissioned by Ymere as part of the redevelopment of Nieuw Waterlandplein, the Waterlandplein Stage redefines the concept of a communal gathering place by transforming between an ornamental installation and a dynamic amphitheater.
Concept and Vision
The project was born from a desire to create a vibrant meeting point for local residents that avoids the emptiness often associated with unused stages. “We recognized early on that an idle podium can evoke a sense of desolation,” says Frank Tjepkema, founder of Tjep. “This insight drove our decision to design a space with dual functionality—both a striking aesthetic feature and a practical performance venue.”
Dual Functionality
Inaugurated on October 9th, the Waterlandplein Stage serves two distinct purposes. By day, it stands as a visually captivating installation, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the redeveloped Nieuw Waterlandplein. With the flick of a switch, hidden platforms rise from the ground to form a central stage, surrounded by an amphitheater of seating, ready to host performances, events, or community gatherings.
Transformative Design
The essence of the Waterlandplein Stage lies in its ability to transform. “A stage performance is about transformation—an experience that changes you,” Tjepkema explains. “This project embodies that idea through its shifting form and function, moving effortlessly from ornament to active stage and back again.” The design not only serves the practical needs of the community but also symbolizes the transformative power of shared experiences.
By merging innovative engineering with thoughtful design, Tjep. has created a space that invites connection, creativity, and celebration for the residents of Amsterdam-North.
