Ambition
To bring Rotterdam’s rich maritime heritage to life, Tjep. crafted an exhibition that transforms history into a visceral, immersive experience. "Geen zee te hoog" (No sea too high) reimagines 300 m² of the Maritiem Museum Rotterdam, using 600 slender poles to create a dynamic landscape that celebrates the Dutch spirit of resilience and exploration. Our ambition was to make centuries-old artifacts resonate with modern audiences, turning static displays into a narrative voyage.
Approach
We began by diving into the museum’s vast collection, carefully selecting 50 iconic artifacts that embody stories of adventure, innovation, and survival. Inspired by the Dutch landscape of masts and pilings, we designed a flexible system of poles to support custom furniture and displays. These poles, varying in material and form, evoke the strength and adaptability of a seafaring nation. Collaborating closely with the museum’s in-house builders, we ensured the installation was both visionary and practical, seamlessly integrating with the existing space.
Result
The exhibition is a journey through time, where visitors are enveloped by the rhythm of the tides and the legacy of exploration. The poles don’t just hold objects—they frame stories, creating a dialogue between past and present. Each artifact, from weathered ship relics to intricate navigational tools, is elevated to spark curiosity and awe. As Frank Tjepkema notes, “We don’t just design spaces; we design experiences that make history pulse.”
