Social Dance

Five free-standing robots stand in the room, each scrolling a phone. Built in corten steel, polished stainless steel and brass, the Valets take the most reflexive gesture of our time — the scroll — out of our thumbs and perform it for us. A near-silent motor drives a walking-machine linkage; a stylus lands on the glass and swipes.

A Crowd Without a Single Person

Across the screens runs an endless feed of faces: people from the street, models, faces that have been under the knife. None of them exists — every portrait is generated. Nothing connects the five Valets, and yet they move as one, performing the same score again and again: swipes that gather, scatter and answer one another in canon, then slow to a single, meditative gesture. The score never changes; the faces never repeat.

More Than a Scroll

A Valet can also be a clock advanced one minute per swipe — Simple Clock, Celestial Clock — or drift through fields of colour, glitches, a slowly turning still life, a photo album, or a mirror that swipes into the past.
